7-7-07: Lucky or Not?

Whoever said that 7-7-07 was going to be a lucky day didnt know what they were talking about. Our luck started to run out on Friday night around 7:30pm. I picked Blake up out of his chair from dinner and could tell he had a fever. So I took his temperature and it was 100.4. We gave him a bath and as we were drying him of he was shivering so bad. I gave him some tylenol and and we put him to bed around 8. I figured he just needed sleep and would be fine in the morning. HAH! I woke up to him crying around 3am and went in and checked on him. He was still a little warm but I didnt check his temperature again. He fell right back to sleep and seemed ok until I heared him again at 5:30am. So Nate and I both went in to check on him and he was totally hallucinating this time. He was telling us to look at the choo choo train on the ceiling and that there was a choo choo train in his room. WoW! We took his temperature again and it was 102.4. Nate then got dressed drove to the 24 hour kroger and got Tylenol fever reducer (two bottles of it) and was home in 20 minutes. We gave him a dose of that and Blake and Nate came down and fell asleep on the couch until 8:00. When I came down at that point, Blake still had a high fever and was sweating. I decided that it was time to call the doctor. We had an appointment at 9am. Nathan took him to the doctor and came home about 10am saying that he did have a high grade fever and that he just had a sore throat and to call the doctor on Monday if the fever continued through the weekend. We sat on the couch for a while and then nate left about 10:30 to take something to the post office here in town. As soon as he left, I told Blake he needed to go upstairs and take a nap. He didnt want to go upstairs, but wanted to lay on the couch. I didnt argue with him, and went and got his pillow and got him settled on the couch with a movie. I then went to make a few phone calls for work, got a bowl of cereal and was sitting at the kitchen table. I had just gotten off the phone and looked over to check on Bubs......ahh this is the hard part for me..... he was having a seziure on the couch. I ran over to him sceaming his name and picked him up laid him on the floor and grabed my phone off the table. I called Nate and told him to get home now, hung up with him and called 911. I talked with Jeremey from the center who was such incredible help to me, as I was alone with my 2 year old son who was having a seziure. I was freaking scared. I was screaming Blakes name and screaming "this can not be happening to me" over and over again. I told Jeremey what was going on and he was telling me what to do. About 2 minutes into the call, Blake began to turn blue. The color from his face began to fade and his lips were turing purple then blue right in front of my eyes. That is when I really began to panic. This lasted about 30 seconds (which in mothers time is FOREVER). At this point, the seziureing seemed to seese and Blake was just laying helpless on the floor. Just then Nate ran through the door and came running over to where Blake was laying. I asked where the paramedics were and Jeremey said they were on the scene. Nate ran to the door and they were there. They came in and took over for me as I stepped aside and watched in horror as my son lay helpless on the floor. I had no idea what to do. I was so scared. They then asked what hospital we wanted to go to, and we decided to go to Childrens. This is now about 11 am, I ran upstairs threw on some clothes, grabed my purse, deoderant, toothbrush/paste, several extra diapers and wipes, because I knew we could be there several hours. I came down, Nate got in the car, I rode with Blake to the hospital and we were off. It took forever to get there, as in seziure cases they do not use their sirens due to the fact that the sound and flashing lights could send a paitient into another seziure. It took about 30 minutes to get to childrens (again, in mothers time it was FOREVER). We got there a just shy of 11:30, and we were in a room in 20 minutes. The doctors came in and examined him and said they believed it was caused by the high grade fever which in correct terms his seziure was called, "A Febril Seziure". They did some blood work and said they would keep and eye on him and would come back with the results. We sat and waited for about 3 1/2 hours while Blake was in and out of sleeping and crying and then sleeping and then crying again. About 2:00, Mary Jane (my boss) and Becca (my bff) both came to see us. It was so nice to see familiar faces. I just wanted to break down and cry, but I knew I had to be strong. They stayed and talked with us for about an hour or so, which Blake slept through the whole visit. Once they left, the doctors came in about an hour later and said that Blake was not coming out of this as quickly as they would like and felt that there might be something else wrong with him and they wanted to do more testing. They wanted to do a Cat Scan and a Spinal Tap. I began to freak out at this point. I didnt mind so much about the Cat Scan but the Spinal Tap was another story. But I knew that they wanted to rule out a bacterial infection so I knew it was something we had to do. They got him prepared for the spinal tap with a numbing medication on his back, and sent us to the Cat Scan room. Well, as soon as Blake got on the table and strapped in, he went nutz. He did not want anything to do with this huge machine. So we came back to our room, talked to the Doctors and they decided to give him a drug that would make him drosy and sleepy enough to allow them to do the Cat Scan. At this point, Blake started to perk up a little bit, he was asking for his toys and where Bailey our dog was and he wanted to go home. It took about a half hour for the meds to kick in and let me tell you. It was hilarious to see our son on this drug, because it actually made him a little drunken sailor more than anything. He was cracking us both up. He was saying all this funny stuff and his eyes were half shut and he was just hilarious. It actually felt good to laugh a little bit. So we go to do the next Cat Scan, and again our luck was dead, he went nutz. He wanted nothing to do with this machine. It really freaked him out. The doctors and Nurses were shocked, they could not believe that he was able to be that worked up even on the medication. So we came back to the room, and talked again with the Doctors about what to do. They examined Blake again and really felt like he was starting to come out of the groggy stage now. So they decided to just keep us over night for observation and they would decide what to do in the morning. So at about 7pm, we finally got moved into our room upstairs, A6 South room 44!
Blake still needed help walking but he wanted to walk to his room, again, still looking like a drunken sailor. We got to our room, a new set of Doctors and Nurses came to check on him and examine him it was a whirl wind that is for sure. We got settled and orderd Blake some dinner since he had not eaten since 8 am that morning. Then Nate went to try and get us something to eat, as we had not eaten anything all day (not even breakfast)! I was starving. Just about 8pm, Tom and Kay Moll (our minister and his wife) came through the door. It was again so nice to see a familiar face. They stayed and talked with us for about 40 minutes or so and by this time, Blake really seemed back to his normal self. He as playing with Tom and laughing so hard he got the hic-cups. It was so cute. They left then and our food arrived. We all ate dinner and at about 9pm, my mom showed up to take Nathans place. Nate left the hospital at about 10 or so and came home to get some rest to be at church in the morning. Mom and I stayed with Blake all night. He went to bed around 9:45 and slept really good only waking up once. I slept on the ever so comfortable sleeper couch and mom slept in the rocking chair. It was a rough night for me and mom that is for sure. I could not close my eyes due to the fact that all I could see was my son on the living room floor having this seziure. Then when I was able to doze off, he would move or make a sound and I would panic. The hours krept by, I thought i was going to loose it. Blake woke up at about 3 am, with just a slight temperature and then went right back to sleep after the nurse was done checking him out. He then slept until 6:30am. We got up had breakfast and waited for the doctors. It wasn't until 10:25 or so when all 9 of them walked in. WOW!!! There were doctors, nurses, cheif residents, residents. They basically went over everything that had happened in the last 24 hours and told us what they felt was wrong. They came to the conclusion that he did have a "Febril Seziure" and that it just took him lot longer to come out of it then they expected. The decided not to do anymore testing on him and gave us some information on these kinds of seziures for the future. They said that these are very common and that there is nothing that can help prevent them and to just be familiar with them and the safety procedures. We signed our discharge papers and we were free to go. We left he hospital at about 11:30 on Sunday morning. We got home to find that Becca had prepared lunch for us and we didnt have to worry about a thing. What a great friend we have huh?!? I could not have gotten through any of this with out her and her support. Nor could we have gotten through this without everyone who was praying for us. Word spread quick and there were a ton of prayers being lifted up for us all day on Saturday and Sunday. Thank you to everyone, Nate and I appreciate you so much! We came home, and crashed after lunch. Blake is doing wonderful and seems to back to his normal fun, crazy, loving self. He slept great last night and is doing wonderful today. I decided to stay home with him today just to give him a full day of rest and no horse play or being outside with it being so hot. I as well was so drained that I could not really function and new that I needed the rest just as much as he did. So we stayed home and relaxed all day. It is now almost 2pm and I am thinking that 7-7-07 was a lucky day for us. We didnt really start out with much luck, but by the end of the day, we had our son back and laughing with him in our hospital room as he flirted with the nurses on our floor. We were VERY LUCKY!!!
